OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD -- CNN anchor Anderson Cooper was blinded for thirty-six hours as the result of retina sunburn he suffered while on assignment for 60 Minutes. At first, doctors believed he'd sustained too much exposure to Wolf Blitzer's halo, a condition that CNN doctors call "blitzer burn."
IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE -- "Giant Baby," a sitcom being developed by TV Land, stars Kirstie Alley as a Broadway diva, with Rhea Pearlman as her assistant. In the action-packed pilot episode, Kirstie is cast as Peter Pan but is canned after she's suspended from a cable and pulls down the roof of the Helen Hayes Theater.
CIRQUE DU FLOP -- The $100 million Cirque du Soleil's "Iris," a Hollywood retrospective which was predicted to run ten years at L.A.'s Dolby Theater, is closing. Blamed are seat prices as high as $253 for a VIP package... ineffectual marketing... and the West Hollywood Gay Pride Parade where bystanders can watch people cavort in sparkly sequined tutus for free.
RECAPTURED YOUTH -- Zoologists have discovered that male chimpanzees undergo a "midlife crisis" similar to those in human males when they confront their own mortality. Reactions are similar, too. The conflicted chimps still want to throw feces at visitors, but they want to do it from the front seat of a red Corvette convertible.
WEBMASTER -- Space science's first "spidernaut," ten-month old "Nefertiti" who successfully flew to the International Space Station and back, died in her enclosure at the Museum of Natural History's Insect Zoo in Washington. Described by handlers as somewhat of a "ham," the arachnid texted Houston Control upon arrival at the Space Station, "Six small steps for Mankind... "
